At the Institute for Sustainability Engagement, students don’t just learn about sustainability. They help put it into practice. Our programs connect Syracuse University students, and peers across New York, Puerto Rico, and around the country, with real community partners, infrastructure, and environmental challenges. Each opportunity supports Syracuse University’s commitment to experiential learning and engaged scholarship, and helps students build skills, professional networks, and confidence to turn complex environmental topics into action.
Sustainable Materials Management Stewardship Program: Puerto Rico
Originating in Puerto Rico in 2010, the GREEN-PR stewardship program gives students and young leaders a chance to build professional experience and leadership in sustainable materials development. Participants receive training in Sustainable Materials Management (SMM), recycling and reduction, compost production, aquatic waste prevention, environmental communication, and sustainability education. Once trained, they take part in a paid, hands-on phase (up to 40 hours) implementing SMM programs in schools and communities across Puerto Rico. Projects are frequently carried out in partnership with local non-profit organizations working in materials management, public education and engagement, and including technical assistance for solid waste professionals to apply best practices and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. Our Stewards frequently go on to pursue advanced studies and seek employment within the sustainability fields.

Sustainable Materials Management Stewardship Program: New York
Modeled after Puerto Rico’s GREEN-PR program and operating since 2015, the New York State SMM Stewardship Program gives college students a chance to build professional experience and leadership in sustainability. Participants receive training in Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) following the waste hierarchy (reduce, reuse, recycle). Once trained, stewards complete a hands-on experiential SMM-related project in their own communities.
Training takes place virtually in the fall, and projects are completed in-person in each steward’s own community in the spring. Upon completing all program requirements (approximately 40 hours of paid time), stewards receive a one-time stipend at the end of the program each spring. Because all trainings and meetings are virtual, the program is open to students at any New York State college or university (including community college, undergraduate, and graduate students). Many NYS SMM Steward Alumni go on to work in sustainability-focused jobs after graduation.
